John G. Ruggie (1944–2021) played a pivotal role in the founding of the UN Global Compact and its Ten Principles in 2000. Then, in 2011, his signature contribution — the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) — was unanimously endorsed by the Human Rights Council. Also known as the “Ruggie Principles,” the UNGPs help business operationalize the Human Rights Principles of the UN Global Compact, have been included in numerous national legislations and ultimately help shape the business and human rights landscape in the 21st century.
